Learn how to discover what USP’s makes your brand different. As if you don’t know what makes your brand different, your marketing will always feel harder than it needs to be.
Finding your brand USP (Unique Selling Point) and defining your purpose isn’t just a branding exercise. It creates the strong foundations your entire business is built on.
When you know:
- What you do
- What you stand for
- Who you help
- Why you’re different
You can apply that clarity to your marketing, pricing, strategy and product development.
And everything becomes more efficient.
- Less guessing.
- Less shiny object syndrome.
- More direction.
Let’s break this down.
Why Your Brand USP’s Matter
Your brand USP is not just ‘we sell handmade jewellery’ or ‘we make candles.’
It’s:
- Why your products matter
- The feeling you create
- The impact you have
- The values you represent
When you identify why you’re unique and what your purpose is, you naturally develop strong brand values that customers connect with.
This clarity translates into:
- A clear brand voice
- Stronger product ideas
- Consistent marketing
- Confident decision-making
You stop chasing trends and start building a brand with direction.
Step 1: Discover Your Brand USP’s
Start with these questions:
- What 5 positive words describe you?
- What 5 positive words describe your work or practice?
- What do family and friends say are your strengths?
- How would you like people to feel when they work with you?
This is important. Your USP is often hidden in your personality and strengths. Not just your product.
Your Origin Story
Your experience matters. Ask yourself:
- What led you to start this business?
- What qualifications, experience or lived moments shaped it?
- What problem were you trying to solve?
Your story builds trust and credibility.
Step 2: Define Your Brand Values
Strong business foundations are rooted in values. Answer these questions based on your values:
- What do I love talking about?
- What gets me fired up?
- What am I passionate about?
- What are my personal values?
- What impact do I want to have on the world?
These answers create the emotional layer of your brand. Customers buy into brands that stand for something.
Step 3: Connect the Dots Using Your USP’s
Now review everything.
- Look for patterns.
- What words keep appearing?
- What themes feel consistent?
Ask:
- Do these final words reflect how I feel about my business now and in the future?
- Do they reflect how I want my customers to feel?
- What core strengths make me stand out?
Focus on the value and feelings you provide first.
Use the exact words your customers use in testimonials and feedback. That language is gold and will speak to your ideal audience you want to attract.
Step 4: Forget the Product… What Impact Do You Create?
This is the most important shift.
Instead of asking:
“What do I sell?”
Ask:
“What impact do I create?”
For example:
- Confidence
- Simplicity
- Organisation
- Joy
- Calm
- Self-expression
Your product is the vehicle. The feeling is the USP.
Step 5: Write Your Brand Purpose Statement
Now bring it all together using this simple structure:
INTRODUCTION
Your name and what you do.
Example:
“I’m Joanne, a retail mentor helping creative product businesses build profitable foundations.”
BELIEVE
What do you believe in and why?
“I believe creative businesses deserve to make money to support their family, not just stay busy.”
HOW
How does this benefit others?
“I help product founders clarify their pricing, strengthen their margins and build confident sales strategies.”
WHAT
What do you offer?
“I provide 1:1 mentoring, strategy sessions and practical retail training to turn ideas into profitable products and plans.”
Keep it clear. Keep it grounded.
Your purpose statement becomes your anchor for marketing, content, product ideas and long-term strategy.
