The Simple Guide to Market Research for Product Sellers

How to Do Market Research for a Product-Based Business (Step-by-Step)

Welcome to the simple guide to market research for product sellers. This will help you truly understand your customers and how you can create a message mining survey, step-by-step.

Market research is amazing as you’ll get so much insight that you didn’t even know about your customers!

It will also confirm what you think you know. So please don’t just assume you know everything.

It can also help you grow your brand to a new, cold, audience. And convert them by talking directly to them. You’ll:

  • Learn their deep desires.
  • Connect with them on a deeper and emotional level.

How Market Research Will Help You

  • It will help you decide what products & services your customers want and need.
  • Plus the tone and language to use in your marketing.
  • It will give you content to talk about.

The best thing is to get them to complain, find out what they are passionate about and what interests them.

Here are questions you can ask your audience to get to know them better:

Market Research Questions: About Them

  • What social media do you actively use?
  • What are your favourite accounts to follow? Why?
  • Do you follow a lot of XXX accounts? Why? – (Add your type of business)
  • Please can you run through what a typical day is like for you?
  • How would you describe your style? (home, fashion or both)

Buying Habits Questions

  • Do you buy a lot of XXX products? If you do, what do you like about these products?
  • Where do you mostly spend your money?
  • Where would you start if you were looking to buy XXX E.g Google, Pinterest. What does that journey look like for you?
  • What drives you to buy XXX and what would you typically be buying it for?
  • Are there any shops that are your go to for XXX?
  • What would stop you from buying XXX?
  • What is the most annoying thing about buying XXX?

Market Research Questions: Product Development

  • Select all of the products you buy for yourself.
  • Select all of the products you buy as gifts. (Add a list of product types that relate to your range and new ideas.)
  • How often do you buy XXX?
  • What makes you buy XXX?
  • If (add company name) were to bring out a new product range (not just XXX!) what would you like to see?
  • How much did you spend on the last gift you gave to a family member or friend?
  • If you were to buy a XX, what would you like to know?

About Your Brand Questions

  • How did you find out about XXX?
  • What words or feelings come to mind when you think of XX?
  • Have you bought from us before? If not why?
  • What would you like to improve with our products?
  • If you weren’t to buy a product from us, what would you buy and from whom?

How To Create Your Survey

Use Google Forms, TypeForm or Survey Monkey. to create your survey and have the survey open for 5-7 days.

Use a selection of multiple-choice and open questions.

  • Multiple choice questions will give easier results but do include an ‘other’ option and ask them to specify.
  • Open questions work well for deep desires and pain points.
  • Make the questions required, so people don’t skip.
  • 8-15 questions work well.

Using Your Market Research Data

Go through and highlight key pain points, deep desires, ideas or phrases from the survey. Use a different colour for easy reference for each.

Be aware of what they are actually saying. You have knowledge of your brand, but your customers do not have this same insight.

  • So don’t assume anything!

Listen to what they have to say and use their exact words. Transcribe – don’t translate!
